What We Look for in Volunteers

We welcome individuals who:
✔ Have a passion for helping others
✔ Are willing to commit at least 40 hours per year
✔ Can remain objective and unbiased when advising clients
✔ Are eager to learn about Medicare and related healthcare options

Comprehensive Training & Ongoing Support

You don’t need to be a Medicare expert—we’ll train you! HICAP provides:
📚 24 hours of classroom training on Medicare, supplemental plans, prescription drug coverage, and long-term care.
👥 Up to 10 hours of shadowing experienced counselors to gain hands-on experience.
📖 Ongoing education, mentoring, and support to keep you updated on Medicare changes and ensure you’re always equipped to assist beneficiaries.

Who We Are

HICAP is part of the Council on Aging – Southern California, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving older adults since 1973. In 1998, our services expanded to include the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) to provide unbiased, confidential Medicare counseling at no cost.

HICAP helps Medicare beneficiaries navigate their healthcare options, including Medicare, HMOs, supplemental plans, and other health benefits—ensuring they maximize their coverage while minimizing costs. Our trained volunteers play a crucial role in empowering seniors with trusted, accurate information to make informed healthcare decisions.
